My quest for the ultimate Final Fantasy playstation collection is almost complete. I managed to find all of the Final Fantasies, from I through XII (except for III which was never released on the Playstation here in the states). Of course, the one game that I had full access to is turning out to be the furthest one from my reach, Final Fantasy VII.
I wrote about Final Fantasy VII back when I broke out my top 3 console rpg’s of all time. If I had to put it to the test, I believe that Final Fantasy VII would win time and time again. It is a classic among classics. I can recall a copy that I had but I’m unsure of if it was given away, sold, or borrowed by a friend never to be returned. I managed to uncover my backup copy of the game for PS One, but a game, and collection, of this nature requires true authenticity. I am now up against a wall, and crammed between a rock and a hard place. To purchase the game now would cost upwards of $60. I would have to go through either ebay, half (which is still ebay in a sense), or Amazon. That $60 wouldn’t even guarantee a new copy, no, the new price has shot upwards of $100. It seems desperate to pay $60 for a game that not too recently sold for almost half that amount, but I am a true fan of the art and in desperate times…well you know how that goes.
What about that PS3 Remake?
There has been countless speculation of a Final Fantasy VII port for the PS3. The rumor mill has been churning since the end of 2006 and it doesn’t appear to be letting up, even in light of some of the more prominent releases in the not too distant future. Even I can’t deny the fact that this would be the perfect substitute for my collection of collections. But alas, this is a dead end road as far as I am concerned. I can hope and hope for redemption in the form of a remake but the collection will not be complete without it. I don’t have a strict schedule but at this rate I’ll give Square-Enix another 2 months to make a remake before I go ahead and pay the hefty price for the original.
