In the wake of battle and amidst all the confusion, Take Two managed to reject the offer from EA Games. The real question is, did they make the right choice?
If I were in Strauss Zelnick’s shoes I would make the exact same decision he did. After all, Take Two, although smaller than E.A. Games, presents a threat in the form of their design house, Rockstar. That alone is worth the pain and punishment of an uphill battle to maintain a standing in this fierce world. However, my reasoning here is not solely based on numbers, or presence in market place, or even share hold value. No none of that really matters to me here, I would decline EA simply because as a company, they are big enough and have no spirit.
Can you ever be too big?
I can recall a smaller more agile Microsoft. They came at a time when IBM was at it’s highest point and dethroned the Goliath like it was a joke. Back then, Microsoft wasn’t the enemy and Windows wasn’t that bad. Now, I can’t stand them. They have made it to a level of supremacy in the software world that puts all others to shame. No wonder it felt so good to laugh at their folly with Vista  . Perhaps this is why I feel a little bit of resentment towards E.A. They make damn good games without having the BEST game of the year under their belt. I don’t want to add fuel to that fire. Great company with a damn good business model and a host of damn good games.
Take Two on the other hand is smaller and therefore more agile. Despite their falling stock price, ignoring the recent rise due to takeover news, I feel that Take Two will do just that. Take Two will take their share of market this year. They will see the sun rise again and again and not just because of Rockstar.
It’s all about Spirit
Take Two has the spirit of the little guy. The heart of a champion is beating beneath the hood. If they sell out to EA, that spirit and heart will be silenced. To avoid the silence, it is entirely likely that Rockstar’s founders will flee. In this day and age creativity must be let free and allowed to roam. EA would seek to silence the creative forces that be over at Take Two. I don’t see how any wise and forward thinking Chairman, President, or CEO could lay down while his company is thrown to the sharks.
So my answer to the original question is… a big resounding Yes, Take Two made the right choice. I just hope they keep up the good work.
