When I started writing this article, I was at a loss for words. No other gaming genre arouses my emotions like a good ole fashioned RPG. I wanted this post to be about the greatest RPG of all time, but I couldn’t narrow it down to just one, so you get to read about 3 of my favorites .
My pre-reqs here were simple:
a) The game had to be a blockbuster hit here in the states. These means that games with poor sales, as good as they may be, would not make the cut.
b) The game had to be fun while still maintaining some heightened level of difficulty. Nothing pisses me off more than an easy RPG game.
c) Lastly, the game had to be timeless. This is the tough deciding factor for GREAT vs good. This game should be one that I could pick up years later and still find joy in it.
With that said, Let’s get to it.
Final Fantasy 3 (The original and yes it was FFVI over seas)
This game introduced us to an orphan named Terra and her group of rebel friends. Together they were tasked with stopping the evil empire from destroying the world with Magicka. This was a happy Christmas for me to say the least. I played this one for 2 days straight, only stopping for food and the occasional bathroom break every so often. Any fan of the series will agree that this one belongs in a list of RPG greats.
Final Fantasy 2 (The original was FFIV over seas)
In FF2 we got to take on the role of Cecil. This was one of the first RPG’s I played where the character would change into something different and better. I don’t want to ruin it for any classic gaming hopefuls but I will say that this one is packed with surprises and is just as fun as it is challenging.
Chrono Trigger
Now here was an RPG that even my cousins could enjoy (They usually only played sport games or games filled with Action). We would fight for the remote when it came time to play Chrono Trigger. Time Travel, Funky Hair styles, and japanese witty humor, this game had it all.
All three of these games have with stood the test of time and are still great RPG’s even in today’s nitty gritty world of Blue Ray and HD enabled games. Those Squaresoft boys and girls sure do know how to make a game.
This just goes to show that a Great game will always be a great game.
Honorable Mentions: Final Fantasy 7

Another hit from Squaresoft that caught me by surprise. I don’t want to spoil this one either but it is another RPG that is just filled with twists and turn.
