Is the Sony PS3 in danger of becoming extinct?

January 11th, 2008 · 3 Comments

And there I was, it was a cool 45 degrees out and I was sweating like crazy. I could feel the tension all around me. As I looked to my good friend, Phill, I could tell he was feeling it too. The anxiety was killing both of us and we weren’t the only ones here. In the bushes across the way, I could make out eyes. I wasn’t sure how many others were here, but I could feel their eyes peering down. We were in this for the long haul and no one was going to tell us differently. Then, out of no where, a lone individual made a dash for it. Out from the bushes, trees, and every other hiding spot there was came hordes of people. There were hundreds of us and we all wanted the same thing that day, we all wanted a Playstation 3. It seemed like the doors of Circuit City were going to be broken down that day, but then we all came to the steps and realized it. The idiot who ran out in front, made us into even bigger idiots for following him. Circuit City wasn’t open yet and they wouldn’t be open for another two hours. Yes we were all fools that day.

What you have just read is a true story played out by myself and about 200 other individuals. We wanted the Playstation three bad that day, and some were willing to fight for it. I actually had one reserved at a nearby GameStop, but I wanted one more to sell on Ebay so that I could recoup some sort of profit, what can I say, I’m a business man :D. The fact is, I wanted my PS3 just as bad as the next guy and I was willing to wait out in the cold for hours on end to get it, so what I’m about to say is not meant as a threat, but a concern. I fear that the PS3 may be in danger of becoming extinct…

First wrong move?

I first came to this realization when Sony originally dropped the price in an attempt to garner sales. They succeeded in just that, and then some, but there was no concern for those who purchased the unit just before the announcement came out. The price was dropped by $100 here in the states and everyone who purchased it just weeks before had been screwed. Strike one for Sony.

We need the game!
Of course, every company wants sales but a true system that wants to keep gamers coming must create a following. Here is where I fear for this game console’s life. You see, the main issue at hand is Playstation’s game arsenal. Xbox 360 has Halo as a reigning champion in the games arena, Nintendo has the likes of Zelda and Mario, but Playstation doesn’t have the game just yet. I mean think about it for a minute and you’ll quickly realize that the system isn’t measuring up in the games arena. Nothing seems to be exclusive to the PS3, and the games that it does have don’t seem all that impressive right now. I loved Heavenly Sword but it was far too short. Assassin’s Creed was another great game but it too seemed some what short and to make matters worse, it’s not exclusive to the PS3. Of course, there’s Darkness, another great game, not too short, and great graphics, but it still left me wanting more.

So the gauntlet has been thrown. Sony this is your call to action, not a warning or a threat, but your chance to rectify the situation. Step up your game!

Note: If you were wondering if I got that 2nd PS3 on that fateful day, the answer is no  . The local cops came and worked with the staff to hand out tickets to ten random individuals, but I sold the 1st system I reserved for a whopping $1,000.

UPDATE - Looks like I’m not the only one who thinks PS3 needs to make better games. Check out the links below for some more interesting reads:
